Implementing these principles will allow you to be the best version of 'you' that you can be in order to achieve greater success in your career for 2011.
Feelings Don't Count Facts do It is a fact that as women we can rely on feelings to make decisions. I know myself having different feelings would have prevented me from doing things all together. I would wait until the right time, when I felt like it or when it felt better. In the business world feelings don't count - facts do. As leaders we often wait to speak to that employee that needs a warning but put it off because it makes us feel bad. In reality you would be doing the team member a massive favour by giving them feedback and assist in their development. Facts include statistics, KPIs, numbers, anything that can be measured through obtaining data. For the example given above, it would include the number of occasions, times or dates. In your next meeting, gather some facts or data to assist in your argument.
Active People Lead People are promoted based on the activity that they contribute to the business. As an active person you will come up on the radar when opportunities present themselves. On the other hand, people who wish, wait and want things to be different will be overlooked every single time. Being active involves saying yes when new projects come up, taking action when others would have paused and getting on with the work without complaints. For example, the next time you are asked for your opinion - say something! Make it count - even if you mess it up get into the habit of contributing to your organisation. How can you serve everyone in the room through your contribution?
Results Come When you Back Yourself I am sure that you have been in your role for a number of years and have established relationships within your working environment. There comes a time when you have to stand up for who you are and what you believe in and use the resources that you have both internal and external. If you don't back yourself and what you are capable of how can you expect your team to follow you? I am working with a client who has been with one employer for quite some time. She has so much to bring to any employer and the result of moving on to a job closer to her family and home will come when she backs herself 100%. Backing yourself means having the confidence in yourself and your abilities even if you have to fake till you make it for a little while. Tell your manager what you have been up to and the achievements that you have made. Blow your own trumpet! Suspend disbelief and take action!
Criteria for Success If you have a criteria for what has to be done on a daily basis it will ensure that you will achieve success. It is the absence of any criteria that can leave us chasing our tails and wondering what we did with our days. I am sure you can relate to this? You get to work; you've had a productive day but what value have you added to the business? For some the criteria may be to attend meetings and get through the day whereas others have a to do list and other projects on the side that can be completed if time permits. Like buying a new pair of shoes we have a set of criteria that we look for. It could be brand, price or even where they are made. What is your criteria for a successful day? What is your criteria for a successful career? What does it need to include? What actions do you need to take right now that will make these a reality for you?
