I went and experienced Anthony Robbins over the last weekend - Unleash the Power Within - 4 days 12 hour days with few breaks. This was surely a course that will change my life forever. There is nothing like being in the presence of an absolute number one coach like Tony Robbins. Day one was focused around overcoming your fears and in particular the commitment to the firewalk. The firewalk proved to be a wonderful metaphor that can be used in all areas of our lives. If you can walk on hot coals that can melt metal then you can do anything! It is a state of absolute certainty where anything even the firewalk can be done. When was the last time you were absolutely certain in your career? Recall that memory and relive the sights, sounds and feelings that made it great for you. When you step up to the plate before the firewalk there is no time for what ifs, buts or maybes it is go or not. We need to take on the same state when we are looking at our careers. We need to maintain our focus on the end goal and take steps that bring us closer every single day. Like the firewalk if you stop moving you will get burnt. There are two ways we can look at our fears. We can fight them or we can use them to create a power that propels us faster towards our goals. If we acknowledge that the fear actually exists it creates room for movement. Sometimes when we vocalise our fears they can sound quite funny (especially if you make the sound of Donald Duck!). Repeating it aloud you can determine if it is true or whether it is an old fear that is no longer required. Tony talks about the 6 human needs. They are the need for certainty, uncertainty, significance, love, growth and contribution. Following the global financial crisis it has been too easy for some to stay in their current role as it fulfils their need for certainty. Certainty is an emotional state that lies within all of us to be tapped into at anytime. It is not something external that we hope, wish and wait for. Imagine what you could in this state of certainty. You could hold those conversations with your team, negotiate that pay rise or move on to another role. 80% of your career journey is psychology and the other 20% is skills and experience. Your mind is the only thing that you have complete control over. What are you choosing to do with yours today? If you maintain a state where you believe this must change now, I must change now and I can change now, what impact would this have on your life? Just like we need to shower everyday, we need to keep our minds active and practising new beliefs on a daily basis. When we have a reason that pulls us along it is much easier to maintain momentum. Pushing ourselves to do things is not a long term solution to creating change in your career. We need to look at what would be the ultimate pain and suffering for you and your family if you remained in the same place in 5 years, 10 years or well into the future. The only way to maintain a role in an organisation would be to add more value than anybody else in the business. Organisations rarely let go of employees who add the most value - it would be unheard of. What knowledge or resource could you tap into that could allow you to add more value than anyone else? What idea do you have that could propel your career to new heights?
